Croll’s and “The Fight of the Century”
Corbett, down for the count!
In 1897, “Gentleman” Jim Corbett was the heavyweight champion of the world. He had revolutionized pugilism with what was termed “scientific boxing.” Corbett and his challenger, the Briton Bob Fitzsimmons, both trained at the preeminent center for boxing, Croll’s Gardens. Today, next to the pizzeria, you can still see the wrought iron gateway to the Croll’s Gardens complex.
Both Corbett and Fitzsimmons lived on the second floor of the Croll’s Building, where we are located. Corbett was known to come down to Croll’s restaurant and play on a private shuffleboard table he had brought in.
The title match is considered a classic in boxing history and was one of the greatest financial endeavors of its time, a staggering $2,700,000 having been spent on it.
That March day in Carson City, NV, after 14 rounds, Corbett seemed to have the upper hand over a bloodied Fitzsimmons. An unexpected opening gave the challenger all he needed to land a powerful blow to the solar plexus, sending Corbett down to the canvas and ending the match.
